Pool safety signs for gyms and health clubs

What we looked at, and what we found

Western Australia has the country's only mandatory resuscitation notice for commercial pools, under regulation 19(2) of the Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007 and clause 2.25.1.4 of the adopted Department of Health Code. The categories the Code covers are council pools and aquatic centres, schools and learn-to-swim centres, hotels, motels, resorts, serviced apartments and caravan parks, and residential developments. Fitness centres are not named in that list. We are not going to tell you a gym is caught, and we are not going to tell you it is not: a commercial gym pool may well be an aquatic facility for the purposes of these regulations, and that is a question for the Department of Health rather than for a sign supplier. Queensland reaches "regulated pools", defined as pools on residential land and at class 1, 2, 3 and 4 buildings, plus moveable dwellings and residential parks. A gym pool inside a class 2 apartment building is a different case from a standalone fitness centre, and we cannot tell from here which your building is. Where the duty does apply, the sign must be at least 300mm by 300mm and durable and weatherproof.

New South Wales applies the Swimming Pools Act 1992 to premises with a residential building, a moveable dwelling, or tourist and visitor accommodation. A gym in a residential building is inside that; a standalone health club is not obviously any of the three.

In Victoria, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT we found no resuscitation signage requirement in the instruments we read.

The two questions we could not answer

• Whether a private ACT gym pool is a "regulated swimming pool" under section 83B of the Building Act. The face of the statute suggests it may be. All the published guidance describes a home pool scheme. We could not reconcile the two.
• Whether work health and safety law creates a first aid signage duty at a pool that is also a workplace. A staffed health club is a workplace, this is the most likely route by which a duty could reach you, and we have not tested it. If any of the questions on this page matters commercially to you, this is the one to put to your WHS adviser.

Two further limits apply to everything above. Council by-laws were not searched, and there are more than five hundred councils. ACT and Northern Territory health law was not searched, which matters because Western Australia's duty sits in health law while its building regulations look empty.

The signs that fit a health club

The CPR sign is the one worth having whether or not a regulation asks for it. A gym pool draws adults exercising, often alone, often outside staffed hours, which is the situation a resuscitation chart exists for. 350mm by 710mm on aluminium composite panel, seven colours.

The Danger Chemical Storage sign is the one gyms actually forget. Your plant room holds chlorine and acid, it is back of house, and it is a separate question from the pool deck.

The Pool Rules sign is a partial fit. Its six rules were drawn for a home pool, and the leading one, "Children must be actively supervised by an adult at all times", is the largest panel on the sign and may be irrelevant at an adults-only lap pool. No running or rough play, no diving, secure the gate and no glassware all transfer. Read the six before you decide.

What we do not make: spa, sauna and steam room signage, shower-before-swimming and hygiene notices, lane allocation signs, and pool etiquette signs. Earlier copy on this page implied we supplied all four. We do not, and a general safety signage supplier is the right source for them.
